WORDS BY ALLEY PASCOE

Fulfilling design dreams is all in a day’s work at JMJ Interiors.

It’s in the polished marble floors of the lobby at Raffles Singapore, in the light-reflecting concrete walls of Amangiri Resort in the Utah desert, and in the rich velvet chairs of the bar at the Four Seasons in Mexico City. It being inspiration, of course.

Jan-Marie Jaillei finds inspiration in the most luxurious corners of the world, and she brings it home – here to Darwin – for her clients at JMJ Interiors. As the only full-service interior design studio in the city, JMJ offers home renovation services, commercial fit outs, new builds, styling, furnishing and consults. β€œIt’s a turn-key service, I take care of everything from concept to completion, from hiring the best trades in town to selecting the perfect towels for the bathroom,” says Jan-Marie, who studied Interior Architecture at the prestigious Inchbald School of Design in London and also holds a Diploma of Architectural Feng Shui from the renowned New York Institute of Art.

With her international education, her former career in high-end hotels and her extensive travels, Jan-Marie is a world-class act. One of her favourite styles is British colonial – a la the aforementioned Raffles Hotel – influenced by her time living in Asia, the Middle East and the UK. β€œMy style is warm, soulful, tropical elegance, defined by a life well-travelled,” says Jan-Marie, who returned to Darwin (where she grew up) a decade ago and is proud to be the current Deputy Chair of the SA/NT branch of the Design Institute of Australia. β€œThe most satisfying part of my work is hearing how much a client loves coming home to their new space. To me, a beautiful room is full of the things you love. That’s true beauty.”

Designer’s Tip: Introducing indoor plants to our homes aligns with the Year of the Wood Dragon, emphasizing biophilic design principles. These lush, leafy additions not only purify the air but also foster emotional rejuvenation.
