Welcome to the new era of The Essington School.

The first day of the school year is always brimming with excited energy and nervous butterflies. This year, at The Essington School, it was also marked by a torrential downpour. New Principal and Chief Executive Officer, Paul Nyhuis, took it as a good omen. “Rain is cleansing and beautiful, it certainly didnβt dampen our spirits on the first day of school,” he says, adding that it has indeed been a fantastic start to the year for Darwinβs leading independent school. “Thereβs a positive energy and optimism about our improvement agenda within the school community.”Β

Itβs 2024, and thereβs plenty to be excited about at The Essington School. For one, all students β from pre-school to Year 12 β have been reunited at the Rapid Creek campus, with the return of the senior students from Charles Darwin University. “The transition has been very seamless, and itβs really brought us together,” explains Paul, a long-term Territorian with an impressive career in education and a clear vision for the future of the school, which was first established in 1989 by the community for the community.

“I want us to strive for excellence on every level β to be world-class. I want our students to be proud to study here, our staff to be proud to work here, and our parents to be proud members of our community.” For over 30 years, The Essington School has been offering exceptional education to Darwin families. Today, the school continues to lead the way and raise the bar. “We have 800 students and 150 staff, great facilities, outstanding academic outcomes, very strong programs in music, sports and enrichment, and amazing after-school activities,” says Paul, noting that the βgreat facilitiesβ are ever expanding, with a new preschool upgrade. As I said, thereβs plenty to be excited about. The Essington School is in safe β and stable β hands with Paul, who has a Master of Education and a number of leadership roles under his belt.

βAs a local, I believe I can strengthen our culture and really take us to the next level,β he says. βIβm committed to our vision to be world-class and determined to lead us there with passion and purpose.β While much of Paulβs work is in the boardroom, itβs in the classroom where he gets his energy and enthusiasm. βSeeing our students achieve and do amazing things is inspiring and knowing the work weβre doing in the boardroom is having a positive impact in the classroom is exciting,β he reveals. βFundamentally, weβre here to provide our young people with excellence and a βworld-classβ education, and thatβs exactly what weβre doing.β
