Outstation Gallery Opens at the Waterfront

Darwin’s art landscape has undergone a stunning transformation. The newly opened Outstation Gallery at the Darwin Waterfront is more than just a gallery, it’s a destination, an experience and a proud celebration of Aboriginal art and non-Indigenous works by celebrated Northern Territory artists. Boasting a museum-quality fit-out and sweeping harbour views, this destination is a true game-changer for art lovers and collectors.

At the helm of this exciting new venture are two of Australia’s most respected names in the Indigenous art world, Matt Ward and Paul Johnstone. With their combined 40+ years working with Aboriginal art centres, Matt and Paul have long championed ethical representation and the cultural preservation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art. Their powerful partnership brings together the best of their former galleries, merging their expertise, networks and passion to create something truly significant for the Top End.

“We could only go so far independently, but merging allows us to take that leap and build something truly impactful,” says Johnstone.

Together, they’ve presented Aboriginal artwork at major national events, including Adelaide’s Tarnanthi Festival and co-created the SALON des Refusés, a hotly anticipated annual showcase for works not selected for the Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards (NATSIAA).

Step inside Outstation Gallery and the space features polished concrete floors and crisp white walls that slide seamlessly to transform the layout for each exhibition. With a backdrop that opens onto uninterrupted views overlooking Stokes Hill Wharf and Fort Hill, it’s architectural elegance that meets coastal serenity. Located just behind the main Waterfront thoroughfare and next to Pink Chopstix Restaurant in Building 2, this beautifully designed space offers a peaceful retreat with serious cultural impact.

Outstation Gallery doubles as an exclusive venue available for intimate board meetings, an elegant dinner party or curated private events. Imagine sipping fine wine surrounded by world-class Indigenous art, as the sun sets across Darwin Harbour. This is the kind of experience that stays with you.

A member and signatory to the Indigenous Art Code, Outstation Gallery is committed to fair dealing with artists, their art centres and communities. Matt and Paul work directly with Aboriginal-owned art centres across Australia and have facilitated acquisitions for world class institutions like The National Gallery of Australia, The National Museum of Australia, Artbank, and even the British Museum.

While its core mission is to honour and promote Aboriginal art, Outstation Gallery also showcases contemporary work from non-Indigenous artists who have strong ties to the Top End. Artists like Steve Gough, David Wickens and Hannah van der Wal, Bryan Bulley, Sarah Brown and Geoff Todd have been represented by Outstation.
