The Northern Territory’s cruise ship sector is experiencing remarkable growth, with cruise and expedition shipping playing a pivotal role in the region’s Tourism industry. For the financial year 2023/24, it’s estimated that the industry generated an impressive $181 million in economic output. During the same season the Northern Territory saw a record-breaking 131 cruise ship visits, with 118 of those stopping in Darwin. Regional destinations, including Yirrkala, Bathurst Island, and Melville Island, also welcomed cruise ships, marking the largest cruise season in the Territory’s history. 2024/25 is looking to break further records.

Thanks to Darwin’s proximity to Asia, it serves as an ideal gateway port for international cruise lines. The Top End’s warm tropical climate makes it perfect for year-round cruising. Larger ships typically visit from October to March, while smaller, luxury expedition cruise ships use Darwin as a home port for exploring the remote Northern Australian coastline between April and September.
The Darwin Port Cruise Ship Terminal, a purpose-built facility, can accommodate small to medium-sized cruise ship operations and has proven its capacity to handle even the largest ships visiting Australian waters on transit stops.

April 2025 is shaping up to be an especially busy month, with several prestigious cruise ships expected to dock at Darwin’s Fort Hill Wharf.
