The Amerigo Vespucci Ends Her World Tour, with Darwin as Australia’s Sole Stop

On June 10, 2025, the Italian Navy’s most iconic tall ship, Amerigo Vespucci, returned home to Genoa, marking the official end of her almost two-year World Tour. Having travelled over 50,000 nautical miles, visiting 53 ports across 32 countries and 5 continents, this journey was more than a maritime milestone, it was a global showcase of tradition, diplomacy and cultural exchange. And right here in the Top End, Darwin proudly played a pivotal role.

Back in early October 2024, the Amerigo Vespucci sailed into Fort Hill Wharf at sunrise, turning heads with her unmistakable silhouette and vintage charm. It was the ship’s first visit to Australia in more than 20 years and Darwin was her only stop on Australian shores.

Thousands of locals lined up at Fort Hill across four days from October 4–7. Visitors of all ages had the rare chance to step aboard the nearly 100-year-old vessel, with many in awe of the intricate brass and timberwork that has remained largely unchanged since her 1931 launch. Her beauty and grandeur were matched by the warmth of her crew, led by Captain Giuseppe Lai, who welcomed visitors as they stepped onboard.

Her visit was part of the Vespucci World Tour – Villaggio Italia project an initiative backed by the Italian Ministry of Defence and 12 national ministries. It combined the ship’s traditional role as a naval training vessel with a modern mission: to promote the excellence of Made in Italy to the world.

Darwin joined international cities such as Los Angeles, Tokyo, Singapore, and Abu Dhabi in hosting not only the ship, but also the Villaggio Italia exhibition – a celebration of Italian culture, innovation and craftsmanship. Over 400,000 people visited the ship and exhibition throughout the global tour.

The Amerigo Vespucci may have sailed on, but her visit left a lasting memory for thousands of Darwin locals who witnessed her magic.
