TIO, the Territory Insurance Office, has proudly sponsored AFL Northern Territory (AFLNT) for over 30 years, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the Territory’s players, volunteers, umpires, and fans. This 2024/25 season, the TIO NTFL once again, brings the community together, embodying the Territory’s spirit.

TIO’s partnership with AFLNT is a commitment to fostering social connection, promoting health, and creating a platform where everyone – from juniors to elite players – can shine. As the naming rights sponsor for both the Northern Territory Football League (NTFL) and the Central Australian Football League (CAFL), TIO supports over 5,000 players in the Top End from more than 160 clubs, as well as 1,000 volunteers and 250 umpires who all bring the 18-round season to life. This season, over 100,000 fans will pack the stands, proving that football is indeed a cultural cornerstone of the Territory.
AFLNT Head, Sam Gibson, captured the community’s enthusiasm perfectly at the start of the TIO Round One, remarking, “The anticipation for the return of Top End football will bring TIO Stadium to life once again. TIO’s support represents a steadfast partnership that strengthens the league and supports its integral role in the Territory’s culture.”
Margaret Pratten, TIO’s Head of Operations, echoed this sentiment, reflecting on TIO’s 30-year history in supporting Territory football. “AFL is a big part of life in the NT, and it brings the community together,” she said. With multi-generational families gathering at TIO Stadium, this season celebrates the essence of Territory pride, resilience, and continuity.
The importance of AFL in the Territory is also deeply symbolic. As we approach the 50th anniversary of Cyclone Tracy – a devastating event that left 80% of Darwin in ruins and its population left traumatised. In the cyclone’s aftermath, the NTFL 1974/75 season was suspended as over 36,000 people departed from Darwin. Despite these challenges, football heard the call to continue and within a month, a short, 6-week morale-boosting competition was played, uniting the community during a time of unparalleled need. The courage shown then is mirrored by today’s Territory spirit, and TIO’s longstanding support reflects that same resilience.
From its roots in post Cyclone Tracy Darwin to today, Territory football has grown into a powerful force, promoting social cohesion, health, and pride. It continues to bring families together, empower players, and nurture the next generation. TIO’s dedication to this cause and the enduring partnership with AFLNT showcases an unwavering commitment to supporting Territorians.
