Is it a 100-foot croc, a soaring mermaid, or perhaps a landing alien? Don’t worry, your eyes aren’t playing tricks! This weekend, the skies over Cullen Bay Beach will be filled with the wonders of the Kite Festival Darwin, thanks to Activate Darwin.

This year, the festival is bigger and better, spreading the fun across TWO days – this Friday, September 20th, and Saturday, September 21st! And the best part? It’s completely FREE and family-friendly!
Festival Dates & Times:
Friday, September 20th: 5pm – 9pm
- 5pm: Event opens – let the kite flying begin!
- Kids activities to keep the little ones entertained.
- 6pm: Light-Up Kite Show – prepare to be dazzled!
- 7pm: Family movie – bring a picnic blanket and relax under the stars.
Saturday, September 21st: 12pm – 9pm
- 12pm: Event opens – more kite fun awaits!
- Kite shows, face painting, jumping castles, live music, and even a kids’ disco!
- 7pm: Family movie – perfect way to wrap up the day!

Highlights of the Festival:
Prepare for hundreds of colourful kites to paint the sky while the ground is buzzing with nonstop family-friendly activities. From jumping castles to disco parties, face painting to live music, there’s something for everyone!
This year, the public kite-flying zone has doubled in size, so grab your kites or pick one up at the event to join in the fun! (They are expected to sell out, so its recommended you bring your own and ALFREDS in Darwin City have some to buy in store) Plus, keep your eyes peeled for the special LED light-up displays starting at 6pm each day – it’s going to be magical!
Food & Fun:
An array of food trucks will be joining the popular restaurants, cafés, and ice-creameries of Cullen Bay, serving up tasty treats to keep you fuelled throughout the festivities.


Getting There:
With thousands expected to attend, parking at Cullen Bay will be limited. But don’t worry – there are free transport options to make your trip easy-breezy:
- Catch your local bus to the city, then hop on the Kite Express (Bus #14) – Public transport is FREE for festivalgoers on both days!
- Drive to the city, park, and catch the Kite Express – Park in the city, then jump on Bus #14 straight to Cullen Bay.
- Drive to the festival and use the Kite Shuttle – Park at the Mindil Beach Market overflow zone and take the shuttle straight to the festival.
