This Saturday 3 May, Top End families are invited to celebrate Kodomo no Hi – Japanese Children’s Day, with a fun, family friendly community event at Bicentennial Park, The Esplanade (near the Children’s Playground) from 11am to 2pm.

A cherished tradition in Japan, Kodomo no Hi is a national holiday dedicated to honouring the happiness, individuality, and future of all children. You’ll spot colourful Koinobori (carp streamers) fluttering in the breeze, symbolising hopes for kids to grow up strong, resilient, and spirited – just like the mighty carp swimming upstream.
The free family event promises a fun-filled day of cultural performances, free crafts, games and plenty of activities to keep the little ones entertained. There will also be delicious food and drinks available for purchase, along with Japanese merchandise stalls for those wanting a special keepsake.
Whether you’re embracing your Japanese heritage, discovering a new tradition, or simply looking for a vibrant family outing, Kodomo no Hi at Bicentennial Park is a wonderful way to celebrate the joy and importance of children in our community.
