Making a Splash

In the land of endless pools (aka Darwin), one company is breaking new ground.

WORDS BY ALLEY PASCOE I PHOTOS BY NAOMI HILL

They say it takes 10,000 hours to master a skill. If that’s the case, Jonny Martin has mastered the art of pool installation four times over. With more than 20 years in the industry, Jonny knows his stuff, and he’s sharing his knowledge at Pooltech NT, having moved from country Victoria to Darwin six years ago.

“I grew up in a pool building family, and my father, sister, and brother still run the pool business in Victoria today,” says Jonny, who started working in the family business full-time when he finished school in 1998. Since then, he’s seen the industry come a long way: “It used to be that concrete pools were the only way to go for expensive builds, but nowadays the Compass fibreglass pools are an exceptionally good alternative.”

The options are endless, and the service is effortless. The Pooltech team organizes everything for your pool, including council permits, landscaping, fencing, and – of course – installation. “When you buy a pool, it’s like entering a relationship with your pool builder, so you need to trust them,” says Jonny.

When Jonny talks about his pools, his enthusiasm is infectious. “Our family is very passionate about pools. We try our hardest at family dinners not to talk about pools, but we can’t help it,” he admits. The current dinner topic: the revolutionary self-cleaning option available with Compass Pools. “Our clients rave about the self-cleaning system because it takes care of all the maintenance. There’s no vacuuming, no robot cleaners, no skimmer nets,” says Jonny, who opted for the self-cleaning option in his own pool at home with his wife and two daughters. “It means our pool is ready to swim in whenever my family wants to get in.” A true master practices what he preaches.
